What Flattening Actually Does
Think of a PDF as a stack of layers. The base is the page content -- the text and images you see. On top of it can sit annotations (comments, highlights, black boxes), form fields, and editable text objects. Layers you cannot see still exist in the file: covered text, filled form values, or markup that will render when printed or re-opened.
Flattening merges that stack into one image. After flattening:
- Covered text is gone. If you drew a black box over a clause, the text underneath no longer exists anywhere in the file.
- Annotations are permanent. Nobody can drag the box away and reveal what is below.
- Form fields become static. Values can no longer be edited or extracted.
- The document is effectively locked. The pages are images, so there is no text to edit or search.
When You Need It
1. Before sharing a "redacted" document
This is the big one. Covering text with a rectangle does not remove it -- the words remain in the text layer and can reappear when printed, searched, or copied. Flattening after redaction guarantees the text is physically gone. It is the final step in actually removing redacted text.
2. When a PDF prints garbled text

3. Before sending a document out for signature
When you finalize a contract or invoice, flattening locks the content so nobody can silently edit terms after you send it.
4. To stabilize a heavily edited file
PDFs edited dozens of times accumulate incremental updates that can corrupt the file. Flattening rebuilds each page clean, removing years of edit history in one pass.
When NOT to Flatten
Flattening has one real cost: the text stops being text.
- If you still need to edit the document -- fix a typo, update a figure -- flatten only as the very last step.
- If you need searchable text -- a flattened page cannot be found with Ctrl+F. If you flattened by accident, run OCR to rebuild a text layer.
- If the file must remain accessible -- screen readers and text-extraction tools read the text layer, not images.
